Amazon.com: Ultimate customer satisfaction

I had bought a new digital camera from Amazon.com early this month. It was a really sweet deal, especially for someone living in Jordan.

Today I was browsing Amazon again looking for some camera accessories and stumbled upon the same camera which I bought. I was pissed to see the price had been reduced by $60. It felt I did the wrong thing by buying it then and that I should have waited –I haven’t taken that many pictures with it anyway.

It occurred to me that I should return it and I was seriously considering it. But then I thought I’d call them up and see what they have to say about it.

I explained to the customer care lady that I bought an item less than 3 weeks ago and that its now $60 cheaper. She checked to verify that what I was saying was true, and then said "Very well sir, your credit card will be credited with the amount in 3-4 business days. Is that the only item or would you like to report more items?" ....I didn’t even have to tell her I wanted a refund, in fact I didn’t think I would get one.

Now the sweet deal got even sweeter with $60 shaved off. I sat and thought for a minute…Did this just happen that easily? Without having to ship the item or go through a series of questioning and disgruntled comments?

I guess people in the US take these things for granted, and us mortals in Jordan can only dream and wish we could get a genuine smiling face when we go shopping. Maybe it is supposed to be a dream… but then that would make USA the land of dreams…

Given all the political issues in the region, I can't say I love USA, so I'll just love Amazon.com instead.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. It surly made you feel better, so probably in the future you will do business again with them. You blogged about it which is "free" advertising for them as well. Win-Win.

The exchange, return, price matching policies are amazing in the US. And it's not only limited to online retailers. Most places give you up to 90 days to retun unwanted items...no questions asked. They also give 30 days price matching (meaning they will refund the difference and sometimes add an extra 10% of the difference) if you've already bought the item and it's available somewhere else cheaper. If you bring in a competitor's advertisement they will usually match the price on the spot. And they also honor competitor's coupons.

Depending on what credit card you use to purchase the items, those companies usually have similar policies and include damage and/or theft insurance as an added bonus. And they extend the manufacturer's warranty on the items.

Usually only ONE telephone call/visit is necessary for price adjustments/complaints. Customer service is taken very seriously (well for the most part). Once I wrote a company because I found a penny in bottle of their pop. No joke...it was sealed too. They sent me coupons for future purchases and also contacted their local distributor who had their salesman contact me. He visited me and gave me 5 cases of pop.

wow... see how much effective promotion they've got by this! They refunded you an amount of 60$, and now you are marketing them for all your friends and blog readers... I feel your testimony is much more effective than any other way of direct promotion.

It's because of their good customer service that I purchase everything excpet computer parts from amazon. I'm willing to pay the extra money for a hassle free purchase.

Amazon had great discounts in its 1st 7 yrs or so of its life, they were losing money. But they just wanted to emphasize the quyality of service. And afterwards, they increased their prices but their loyal customers remaind.

You can only achieve that with alot of investment and a lot of patience. Which both are not to be found in most arab countries.

Amazon is not the norm in this sense. This is rare in my personal experience in dealing with companies. Most do however offer a 30-day return policy, which is because there are so many fraudulent companies out there, trying to take advantage of people. Such a 30-day-return policy (assuming they keep their commitments) is a major selling point for buying anywhere.
